■Editor's Notes

At Kashiwa Campus, there are a few days a year when very strong winds blow. I wonder if this is what’s called the “Tsukuba-oroshi?” Sometimes the wind is so strong that it is difficult to move forward, but on other days the wind is not particularly strong. In contrast, harnessing wind energy offshore, where wind direction and strength are more stable, is a highly attractive idea for Japan, which is surrounded by the sea on all sides. Among offshore wind power systems, a “floating” type, where wind turbines are mounted on floating platforms, will be used in deeper waters. The advancement of such systems requires not only engineering innovation but also comprehensive efforts encompassing coexistence with the natural environment, social consensus building, and even transformation of industrial structures. Please take a look at our special feature article to learn about the development trends of floating offshore wind power, promoted primarily by GSFS.
