Planetary Meteorology and the Venus Climate Orbiter AKATSUKI

Professor Takeshi Imamura

Last December, the AKATSUKI spacecraft arrived at Venus. The purpose of the mission is to study the weather on Venus and to deepen planetary meteorology based on comparisons between Venus and Earth. What is planetary meteorology, and how does it relate to our understanding of the solar system, the Earth, and life in the universe? We will discuss the prospects of AKATSUKI's observations.

Radiation Control Standards from a Biological Perspective

Professor Hiroshi Mitani

In 1895, X-rays were discovered by Roentgen, who was working on "cathode rays" using a discharge tube. This discovery opened the door to a new quantum world in physics, which at the time believed that Newtonian mechanics, Lorentz force, and Maxwell's equations could explain all physical phenomena. The phenomenon of invisible radiation penetrating through cloth and muscle, which are impermeable to visible light, but not through human bone or lead, led to the start of its clinical medical use. With the discovery of various effects of radiation on the human body, which were not expected at first, a system of radiation exposure control was established, and now various technologies using radiation are indispensable in our daily life. In this lecture, the current status and future of radiation biological effects research will be explained through the evolution of radiation control standards.

Resource recycling of buildings

Associate Professor Takeshi Seike

Buildings are created by gathering a large amount of resources on a single site. When these are dismantled, a large amount of waste is generated. In order to prevent this from happening, we must establish a resource circulation system that reuses and recycles waste. The following is an explanation of the measures and issues to be addressed.
