Honors & Awards

Professor SUGIYAMA Masashi of the Graduate School of Frontier Sciences at the University of Tokyo received the 2022 Commendation for Science and Technology from the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT).

Acceptance comments:
"The research was started in my former laboratory at the Tokyo Institute of Technology and was later developed in my laboratory at the University of Tokyo and RIKEN. This achievement could not be made without all my students, the researchers, the collaborators and the supporters who worked for this project. I would like to express my sincere appreciation to all of them. With the recent rapid expansion of artificial intelligence technologies, ensuring the reliability of them is becoming an important social issue. I will continue to put my efforts to construct theories, develop algorithms and realize social implementation to enhance this research to make it become the basic technology that supports the future AI society. The book on the outcomes of this research titled "Machine Learning from Weak Supervision: An Empirical Risk Minimization Approach" will be published by MIT Press in August 2022.
