Kashiwanoha International Village (KIV)
The Graduate School of Frontier Sciences (GSFS) provides a furnished housing facility at the Kashiwanoha International Village (KIV- 14Fl. Park Axis Kashiwanoha) located in front of Kashiwanoha Campus Station. This housing facility is open for international students, researchers, and some Japanese students as well (currently the quota for the Japanese residents are filled).
Japanese culture-specific customs such as deposits (shiki-kin), key money (reikin), and the guarantor system are unnecessary to live in KIV, therefore you can start your new life in Japan smoothly.
Studio Type rooms
Applications are due by the 1st of the month two months prior to the month you wish to move in.
Studio type room is available for short term stay researchers affiliated with GSFS only, from a minimum of 7 days to a maximum of 184 days.
- 4 rooms will be available in late February, 2026.
We will accept applications until December 1, 2025.
The result will be sent via email within 1 week.

Share Type rooms
KIV- General description
KIV has four types of rooms, Share house type, Common type A, Common type B and Studio type. There are a total of 41 rooms. Shared facilities include the kitchen, living and dining room, gender-segregated shower rooms and the laundry room. The shared kitchen is equipped with rice cookers, microwave ovens and other kitchenware. Each room has a desk, a chair and a bed.
From the bus stop in front of KIV to Kashiwa campus, it takes about 10 minutes by the 'Todai shuttle bus'.
Resident Eligibility
- International students admitted or enrolled in GSFS
- Exchange students who belong to official GSFS student exchange programs
- International researchers who work at GSFS
- Japanese students enrolled in GSFS who agree to act as a resident assistant and provide the following support to non-Japanese residents.
*English skills above conversation level are necessary
- Participate in planning and implementation of regular meetings and events for residents
- Cooperate with ILO in offering support to other residents
There are university housing policies developed to support an environment of mutual respect in the housing facility. Residents are expected to follow the housing standards and encourage others to do the same. Residents are responsible for taking ownership in developing a safe, secure, and healthy living environment.
All rooms are for individual use only.
The Studio type rooms managed by the ILO are limited to foreign researchers who are or will be affiliated with GSFS. Full time students enrolled in regular courses should apply for Shared or Common type rooms.

Share house type
Each unit has 3 or 5 individual rooms, a kitchen, and two bathrooms. Each room has desk, chair, and bed. GSFS owns 13 rooms.

[cf.「東京大学大学院学則」(The University of Tokyo Regulations, Article 2 Item 5).] - Researchers: contract period or three (3) years, whichever is shorter.
- 3Residents are expected to occupy the residence space for the contracted period unless some unavoidable circumstances occur.

Toilet with bathroom vanity, desk, chair, and bed. GSFS owns 2 rooms.

How to apply
The application deadline for Studio Type Room is the first day of the month two months prior to the month in which you wish to move in. Please fill out the application form (Attachment 2) and submit by the deadline from the link below.
Decision
All submitted applications will be reviewed according to the GSFS regulations concerning eligibility mentioned in 2. ILO will notify each applicant of the result by e-mail.
Damage/Repairs
In the event of any damage to 1) the main structure part of the building, or 2) furniture, appliances, equipment, fixtures, or the like in the rented housing, kitchen area, and all other spaces of common use by residents, which is determined to have been the fault of the resident, the resident shall assume all financial responsibility thereto in accordance with university regulations.
Liability insurance will cover the cost of the damages, if a tenant damages a rented room due to an accident and becomes liable for damages. The University strongly suggests all tenant to buy a Tenant Liability Insurance.
