Honors & Awards

The fall decoration of 2023 was awarded on November 3. Professor Emeritus Toshiaki Hisada was honored with the Order of the Sacred Treasure, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon. This award is given to individuals who have contributed to the nation or the public through their work in public business over a long period of time.

Professor Hisada was born on March 21, 1950, in Tokyo. He graduated from the School of Fundamental Science and Engineering at Waseda University and obtained a doctoral degree in engineering from the Graduate School of Engineering at the University of Tokyo. He worked for the Institute of Industrial Science and the Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology. In December 1993, he became a professor at the School of Engineering and taught at the Graduate School of Engineering at the University of Tokyo. In April 2013, he became a professor at the Graduate School of Frontier Sciences. In October 2013, he became the president of UT-Heart Inc., where he continues to serve as Chair/CEO.

Throughout his career, Professor Hisada made significant contributions to research and education in applied mechanics and finite element methods. He mentored many outstanding students and developed practical examples for the most advanced applications in continuum mechanics and nonlinear finite element methods. His research on multi-scale, multi-physics heart simulation based on fluid-structure interaction analysis technology achieved a practical level of utilization for the first time globally. This research is now being developed under clinical research aiming for pharmaceutical applications.
