About the Graduate School of Frontier Sciences

CREATING NEW ACADEMIC FIELDS BY TRANSDISCIPLINARY APPROACHES

OUR MISSION

The Graduate School of Frontier Sciences (GSFS) was established in 1988 to create new academic fields based on a concept, which we call gakuyugo (transdisciplinary approaches). Supported by all graduate schools of the University of Tokyo, an independent graduate school was launched exclusively for master's and doctoral courses. It consists of eleven departments that belong to Division of Transdisciplinary Sciences, Division of Biosciences, and Division of Environmental Studies; the Graduate Program in Sustainability Science - Global Leadership Initiative, which belongs to all the three divisions; and two unique research centers.

To tackle significant interdisciplinary problems that cannot be dealt in a sole conventionally categorized field, enthusiastic leading experts joined the GSFS from fields of nanoscience, material sciences, energy sciences, complex systems, biosciences, medicines, environmental studies, and international cooperation The GSFS shares the philosophy of keeping the atmosphere of research and educational environment open with no boundaries between fields and for members of the diverse community consists of approximately 200 faculty members and 1,400 graduate students to closely interact and cooperate to address new issues humans are facing.

WIDE-RANGE AND PROFOUND PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION

Students can have their choices from a variety of university-wide programs, which are designed to acquire broad education and cultivate their own specialties. The GSFS offers wide-range and profound educational programs to train professionals cooperating with Institute for Solid State Physics, Atmosphere and Ocean Research Institute, Kavli Institute for the Physics and Mathematics of the Universe, and Institute for Cosmic Ray Research on the Kashiwa Campus. Furthermore, we have full facilities and substantial programs to enhance intelligence and persistence for students to be future leaders of society. Since the school was first established, more than 8,000 students have completed the programs.

COLLABORATION WITH THE GOVERNMENT AND INDUSTRIES

With Urban Design Center Kashiwa-no-ha (UDCK) as the hub office, the GSFS has been collaborating with the local government, community, and industries. We participate in the Kashiwa Smart City as field trials and support venture businesses. Currently, we are planning to establish an industry-academia cooperation center on the Kashiwa II Campus as the core of the Tsukuba-Kashiwa-Hongo Innovation Corridor Initiative, which the University of Tokyo promotes.

CENTER OF THE UNIVERSITY'S GLOBALIZATION

The GSFS serves as the University of Tokyo's gateway to the world. We are transforming into a global college where you can live and study at the same neighborhood with dormitories built for international students. On the Kashiwa Campus, which plays a role as the center of the future-oriented city with rich nature and cutting-edge urban functions integrated, the GSFS continues to grow blessed with freedom of the new ground.
