Research Activities
Broken symmetry at a surface provides clues about the unique properties of materials. The principal subject of our laboratory is to obtain detailed descriptions of surfaces and molecules at the surface. This helps us understand chemical and physical phenomena at surfaces and properties of various materials adsorbed on surfaces, ranging from small molecules, nano-wires and nano-dots, to bio-molecules such as DNA and proteins. Our current interests focus on (1) single molecule chemistry and physics, (2) physical properties of low dimensional systems and (3) surface chemistry of soft materials.

Future Plan
We have been focusing on the functions of the materials in nano-scale, such as vibrational excitation, reaction and also the conductivity of individual molecules at surfaces, properties of low dimensional metal systems formed using solid surfaces as a template. These studies are carried out using local probe method together with the macroscopic spectroscopies, such as scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). By manipulating electron spins in the materials, the elucidation of reaction mechanisms is carried out in order to control these reactions at will.
