About Changes in the Diploma Presentation Ceremony and Commencement Ceremony 2020 The University of Tokyo

The Diploma Presentation Ceremony and Commencement Ceremony are important ceremonies that serve as a milestone in student life, and we believe that many expected graduates are looking forward to participate in them. However, the Government of Japan has announced countermeasures against spreading infection of the novel coronavirus, and the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare has also presented concrete countermeasures. In order to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus, careful consideration is required for holding large-scale events.
Under these circumstances, we have gathered information including discussions by an expert team at the WHO, and carefully examined how to hold the ceremonies. As a result, to prioritize public health measures for minimizing infection of the novel coronavirus, we decided to hold the ceremonies only with student representatives from each graduate school and faculty.
We are very sorry, but no one other than the representatives of each graduate school and faculty can participate in the ceremonies.
We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused to those who have been looking forward to participating in the ceremonies. We ask that you understand this as an unavoidable measure after giving top priority to the health and safety of all graduating students and their family members.

・Only student representatives of each graduate school and faculty can enter the venue.
・Please check the notice from your graduate school or faculty about presentation of diplomas to each graduates.
・When you come to campus, take measures to prevent infection such as wearing masks.

For family members of graduating students
・We would like to ask that you refrain from visiting campuses on the day of the ceremony.

For press
