Research Activities
1.Sustainability Education
A responsibility of mine lies in curriculum development of sustainability education at higher education level through the operation of Masters Program in Sustainability Science, which was established in Graduate School of Frontier Sciences in 2007. This program aims to train professionals that can take an active role in efforts to achieve sustainability in an international society. I am deeply involved in the organization of "Intensive Program on Sustainability", which is a collaborative program among the University of Tokyo, Asian Institute of Technology (Bangkok) and some other international universities.This is an experimental short program and I try to develop new pedagogy and curricula of sustainability education.

3.Microbiology of biological wastewater treatment processes
I have been interested in fundamental aspects of biological wastewater treatment technology. Especially, biological phosphate removal from wastewater is a major research topic. A paper on phosphorus metabolism of polyphosphate accumulating organisms that are responsible for enhanced biological phosphate removal was awarded "Samuel H Jenkins Medal", that was the best paper award of International Association on Water Pollution Research and Control. A metabolic model to explain how and why polyphosphate accumulating organisms dominates has been known as "The Mino Model" internationally. A review paper published in Water Research was selected for the most influential 10 papers in the history of Water Research.

Messages to Students
Since I was involved in Master's Program in Sustainability Science, I have had more chance to think about how the sustainable society looks like. A static society cannot be sustainable. So, the key question is: how to create the incentives to activate the society other than "money" or "economic efficiency" under the society with limited economic development. In other words, how to sustain the dynamics of society is the most important. I hope you may join me in thinking of answers to this question. By the way, I like a diverse society. In order to be diverse, unique and independent individuals must be getting together. I want students to be aware of their own uniqueness and independency.I have a feeling that diversity could be a source of dynamics of the society.
