Make sure to submit the Inquiry Sheet and indicate in the Questionnaire that you wish to apply for the Special Selection for Professionals.
In addition to the application materials listed in the Guidelines for Applicants, a list of research achievements (publications, scientific presentations, patents, etc.) must be submitted.
Preference for October admission must be indicated in the Inquiry Sheet.
Read the 2023 Guidelines for Applicants to the Doctoral Program of the Graduate School of Frontier Sciences, contact the faculty of the group of interest, and discuss possible research projects. (However, applicants not having a prior discussion with a faculty member will not be penalized.)
Applicants may only contact faculty members about serving as an advisor prior to submitting an application. However, such conversations are prohibited after application submission.
English proficiency will be assessed by the TOEFL ITP test. The TOEFL ITP test will be administered by the Department of Advanced Materials Science as an institution-specific assessment of English proficiency. The scores of this test will only be valid as part of the entrance examination for the Department and will not be released.
All applicants, except for students graduating from a Master's program at the University of Tokyo must take the TOEFL ITP test. TOEFL and TOEIC score reports will not be accepted.
The oral examination (about 40 minutes per applicant) will be used to assess whether the applicant has sound, specialized knowledge and abilities to become a successful doctoral student.
Each applicant will give a 20-minute presentation about his or her research and future direction.
Each applicant should submit a 3-page (A4 paper) summary of his or her presentation, a copy of the Master’s thesis or equivalent document, and a separate abstract of the Master’s thesis or equivalent document.

Allow sufficient time when traveling to the examination venue for the written examinations on August 23.
Acceptance documents will mailed to the admitted applicants on Tuesday, September 6, 2022.
If accepting the offer, the admitted applicants must pay the enrollment fee and submit the appropriate documents between Tuesday, September 20 and Wednesday, September 21, 2022. Detailed instructions will be included in the acceptance documents. Please note that if the enrollment procedure is not followed during the specified period, it is assumed that the applicant declined the offer.
