1. Eligibility

Applicants who have graduated or are expecting to graduate by the end of September 2022 may apply for October admission.

Preference for October admission must be indicated on the Inquiry Sheet. Applicants who fail to graduate before Thursday, October 1, 2022 cannot enroll in October, even if they pass the entrance examination. Applicants wishing to change the October admission preference after submitting an application must notify the Department in writing prior to the oral examination and make an oral statement to that effect at the oral examination on August 29. After the oral examination, admission preferences cannot be changed.

Foreign applicants seeking to start their studies in October 2022, who have completed upper secondary education (equivalent to a high school education in Japan) or university education in Japan (including those expected to complete university education by September 30, 2022) should also select this exam schedule.

Additional eligibility requirements can be found in the Graduate School of Frontier Sciences Guidelines for Applicants.

2. Application Period

Thursday, June 9, 2022 – Wednesday, June 15, 2022.

3. Application Materials

Please submit application documents on the online application site. For details of required documents and the online application site, please check the websites of GSFS and AMS.

Use the provided checklist to verify that you have all the required application materials.

Please download a pdf format of Inquiry Sheet(Master’s Program) from the Department's website, fill out the form, and submit the pdf file to the online application site. For English translation, please refer to this page.

Make sure to rank your laboratory preferences after carefully reading the following notes:

Rank at least the top ten laboratories in order of personal preference, where 1 indicates the first choice. Do not use the same number twice.

If desired, more than ten laboratories can be ranked.

Once the Inquiry Sheet has been submitted, the order of preferences cannot be changed.

Applicants may contact faculty members about serving as an advisor and to discuss possible Master’s thesis research projects prior to submitting an application. However, such conversations are prohibited after application submission.

An agreement from a faculty member to serve as a thesis advisor does not guarantee that the applicant will be assigned to that particular laboratory. The laboratory assignment offer will be made to the applicants during the oral examination. The assignment depends on the laboratory preference ranking in the Inquiry Sheet and the scores of the written exam.

Make sure to mark the preference for October admission on the Inquiry Sheet.

Reading the faculty introductions on the website of the Department of Advanced Materials Science is highly recommended. In addition, attending the entrance examination information sessions of the Department and the Graduate School of Frontier Sciences is encouraged. Details about the information sessions will be posted on the Department’s website. Interested persons may also schedule individual visits to specific laboratories.

4. Written Examinations

Exam 1: Foreign Language

English proficiency will be assessed by the TOEFL ITP test. The TOEFL ITP test will be administered by the Department of Advanced Materials Science as an institution-specific assessment of English proficiency. The scores of this test will only be valid as part of the entrance examination for the Department and will not be released.

All applicants must take the TOEFL ITP test. TOEFL and TOEIC score reports will not be accepted.

Exam 2: Subject Areas

The subject examination will consist of three to four questions in each of the following three fields:

Physics (mechanics, electromagnetism, optics, quantum mechanics, thermal physics, statistical mechanics, solid-state physics, experimental physics, etc.)

Chemistry (physical, inorganic, analytical, organic, etc.)

Materials science (thermodynamics, phase diagrams, structures, transport phenomena, kinetics, materials physics, materials chemistry, materials processes, materials theory, materials design, etc.)

Applicants must answer a total of three questions from the above fields.

Past subject examination questions in physics, chemistry, and materials science are available in Japanese on the Department’s website. Applicants can obtain English translations of past examination questions by contacting Professor Kohzo ITO (email: kohzo@k.u-tokyo.ac.jp).
