Visualizing RNAi at work 2015:07:03:9:27:23
University of Tokyo and Kyoto University researchers have revealed the molecular mechanism of RNA interference (RNAi), the phenomenon by which the synthesis of a specific protein is inhibited, by real time observation of target RNA cleavage at the single-molecule level.

Visualizing the bonding properties of liquid boron 2015:05:01:18:03:54
Boron (B) belongs to the group of element situated between metals and insulators in the periodic table. Though the balance between metallic and insulating tendencies could be altered via pressure and temperatures, the question of whether liquid B is metal or not remains controversial and unsolved. We have carried out high resolution Compton scattering measurements on solid and liquid B and interpreted the results in terms of CPMD simulations, and then conclude that semiconducting properties dominates the physical properties of liquid B.

Antigen complex single molecule observation with X-rays 2015:02:06:16:59:38
A research group led by Professor Yuji C. Sasaki at the Graduate School of Frontier Sciences, the University of Tokyo, and Associate Professor Haruo Kozono at the Research Institute for Biomedical Sciences, Tokyo University of Science, successfully observed the three-dimensional (3D) dynamic single-molecule internal motions of a peptide bound to major histocompatibility complex (MHC) for the first time. MHC is an important protein that controls acquired immune response, presenting pathogens that invade the body to immune cells. The group used the SPring-8 BL40XU beamline to discover how MHC binds to pathogen proteins (antigen peptides) and activates the immune system by observing the internal dynamics of single molecules.

Medaka as a tool for studying human diversity and evolution 2015:01:16:16:41:44
Variations in appearance (such as eye color, hair color, facial features, among others) are observed in worldwide human populations. However, there also exists geographical variation in sexual differences, such as body size, often referred to as sexual dimorphism in the literature. In general, sexual differences among human Asian groups are smaller than that of African or European populations. However, the molecular evolutionary mechanisms of these differences are still relatively unknown.

DNA methylation switches in evolution 2014:04:28:10:41:59
It is accepted in the mainstream of life sciences today that the basic unit of heredity is to be found in the genetic information written in the sequence of nucleotides in DNA. However, even when the nucleotide sequence remains unchanged, if a specific nucleotide sequence is modified by means such as methylation, the state of the DNA (epigenetic state) changes and can lead to genes being expressed or suppressed. This epigenetic information can be passed on through genomic replication, a fact that is currently attracting attention. As a result it is possible that the real unit of heredity is to be found in this epigenetic information overwritten on the DNA nucleotide sequence.
