Examples of apartments for Exchange Students and Foreign Researchers
For a single person
Typical apartment types suitable for a single person are the one-room apartment and the 1K apartment.
The difference between these 2 types (one-room and 1K) is whether there is a separate kitchen area or not.
Some 1K apartments have little difference from one-room apartments. Make sure you check the floor plan carefully.
The average room size is 18 to 24 square meters. It will be 6 Jyo (6 tatami mat size) to 8 Jyo (8 tatami mat size).
Including the front door, kitchen, toilet and bathroom and storage area makes up the standard apartment.
In Japan, standard storage sizes are approximately 91 cm. wide or 181 cm. wide. If you are going to use a futon set, not a bed, make sure you have enough storage area.

For a couple (with or without children)

A typical 2DK apartment floor plan is shown on the right. This might be a little bit tight for a family with children.
The size and layout for apartments larger
than 2DK will be different, depending on the
storage areas and the size of each of the rooms.
It is better not to be too particular about
how many rooms are in the apartment. Choose
your apartment with your lifestyle and family's
needs in mind.
