Train, bus and taxi (public transportation)
About Train Service
In the Kashiwa/Nagareyama area, there are several major train lines, which are the Tsukuba Express (Kashiwa no Ha Campus Station), Tobu Noda line, and the JR Joban line. For students, it is cheaper to buy the student train pass to commute to school. Generally, Exchange Students can buy a student discount ticket that will give 20% off (compared to the normal train fare) when you use JR lines to travel more than 100 kms. one way. Please get the student discount certificate from your university, and present it to buy the ticket at the JR ticketing window.
Check points for the train fare
- You will buy regular train tickets and
tickets for short distance (using the local
train) from the vending machine at the
station.
You will buy long distance train
tickets and express train fare at the ticketing
window (for JR, JR Reservation Ticket Offices,
it is the so-called "Midori no Madoguchi" in
Japanese).
- The ticket for children aged 12 or younger is half-price of the full fare ticket.
Even if the child's age is 12, you must pay the full fare if the child is a junior high school student.
- An adult can usually bring a child aged
6 years or younger free of charge.
(The
number of children you can bring with you,
free of charge, differs, depending on the
train company.)
- There are many kinds of train tickets, in addition to regular train ticket, for example, ticket coupon pack (Kaisuken), train pass (Teikiken), pre-paid card, etc.
For more details, please contact the train company with the assistance of a Japanese speaker.

About Taxi Service
There are designated taxi waiting areas in front of most major train stations.
When you want to stop a taxi running on the street, please raise hand.
You can call the taxi company to come and pick you up, for an additional fee.
In Japan, taxi cabs have automatic opening/closing rear doors. Always let the taxi driver open and close the door for you. Unlike the custom in most other countries, you do not need to manually open or shut the taxi door by yourself.
Taxi fare
Pay the amount of money (taxi fare, in yen) shown on the taxi meter.
In Japan, tipping is not necessary. Change will be returned by the taxi driver.
There are additional charges for taking a taxi in the early-morning and late-night hours. Also, if the taxi takes you on the highway, you will have to pay the highway toll separately (in addition to the taxi fare).
