Living in Japan

Japanese Post Office services and bank services

For short term stay residents

The ATM (Automated Teller Machine) at the post office accepts credit cards issued in foreign countries for cash withdrawals.
If you are planning to stay in Japan for only a short period of time, it is probably easiest to use this system.

For long term stay residents

If you are planning to stay in Japan for a longer period of time, it is probably easiest to open an account at one of the consumer banks near your apartment, to take advantage of the many services, such as money transfer or foreign currency exchange, offered bank customers. In some cases, for example, you can receive refunds directly into your bank account.
Banking hours are Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Accessing your account, for example, for cash withdrawal, by bank machine (ATM), is free of charge until 6:00 p.m.
Some convenience stores have bank machines (ATM) on their premises, with extended hours.

To open your bank account, please be sure to take your Passport, Foreign (non-Japanese) Registration Card, Student ID and Inkan (personal seal, if you have one) to the bank window.

Also, you can open your Post Office savings account.
If you have a Post Office savings account, you can withdraw cash from your account, free of charge, using your own cash card at the Post Office ATM.
