Note
Application Forms for Postgraduate Research Students and Postgraduate Foreign Research Students will be distributed during the above application period at Student Affairs Section on the first floor of the Frontier Sciences, Transdisciplinary Sciences building, and should be picked up in person. 
Note that if you wish the application forms to be posted to you, you must enclose a stamped (JPY 140) self-addressed A4 envelope, and send it to the address below. Please write "Request for Postgraduate Research Student (or Postgraduate Foreign Research Student) Application Forms" in red ink on the front of the external envelope. Those wishing to apply as Postgraduate Research Students or Postgraduate Foreign Research Students must contact the faculty member they wish to study under before applying.

Guidelines for International Students
Applying for a research student status 
for the academic year 2011
The program of Graduate Foreign Research Students (hereinafter referred to as “Kenkyusei”) is offered to a foreign student who wishes to research on a specific subject under the supervision of a professor at the Graduate School of Frontier Sciences.  The student admitted as “Kenkyusei” is not entitled to receive any degree or qualification upon the completion of the program.
1. ELIGIBILITY
 Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree conferred by an accredited educational institution.

2. APPLICATION PROCEDURE
 Step 1:  Contact a professor who you wish to have as a supervisor, and get an approval to apply.
 Step 2:  Pay application fee on line. (\9,800)

      Print “payment confirmation page”.
 Step 3: Prepare the application forms indicated in 4. APPLICATION FORMS.
      Include the printed “payment confirmation page” into an application package and
      send it by the application due.
3. APPLICATION DOCUMENTS
 1) Application form (Form 1, 2 pages)
  A picture of applicant must be attached.
  Aside from the applicant photo attached to the application form, an extra applicant photo (size 3 x 4 cm) must be clipped
  to the application from.  Prior to application, applicants must obtain approval seals from prospective supervisor and head
  of the department.  Application forms without the approval seals will NOT be accepted.
 2) Transcripts of academic records certifying the grades of undergraduate coursework and master’s coursework
  If your university does not issue a transcript certificate, have a copy of your original certified by the university and submit
  the certified copy. All official documents written in a language other than Japanese or English must be accompanied by
  a Japanese or English translation of the document. 
 3) All Diplomas or graduation certificates issued by universities or colleges you have attended
  If your university does not issue a copy of graduation certificate, have your copy of the original certified by the university
  and submit the certified copy. All official documents written in a language other than Japanese or English must be
  accompanied by a Japanese or English translation of the document. 
 4) Study Plan (Form 2) 
  Even if you have not decided your plan or have not talked with your prospective supervisor about the plan, you have to
  write your own plan. 
 5) Financial Plan (Form 3) 
  This document is very important for visa application. Student visa will not be issued without a firm financial plan. While
  applicants will have a chance to apply a scholarship provided private firms after enrollment; applicants must know that
  getting a scholarship is very competitive. 
 6) Certificate of Japanese Proficiency (Form 4) 
  If you have never studied Japanese before, you may indicate so in the form. 
 7) Certificate of Physical Check up (Form 5) 
  Please have it filled in a physician registered in your country.
 8) Contact sheet (Form 6)  
 9) Printed “payment confirmation page” that you will get when finishing payment of examination fee by online. 
 10) One Kaku-2 size (33.2 x 24 cm) self-addressed return envelope
  This return envelope will be used for sending application result.  If your address is in Japan, a 140JPY stamp must be
  affixed to the return envelope.  If it is outside Japan, please contact the Student Affairs Section, GSFS for postal
  charge by email.
4. APPLICATION DUE DATE
 For October 1, 2011 enrollment, applications are due by May 31, 2011.

 Please send us a complete set of application documents by the due date via courier. We will try to inform the selection
 result by the middle of June.
5. EXPENSES
 Entrance fee:  84,600 yen
 Tuition fee (per semester): 173,400 yen

 If you admission as a research student is granted, then you will be required to pay the total amount of the two fees by
 mid September.
6. NOTE
 1) Application documents submitted and examination fee paid will NOT be returned or refunded under any circumstances.
 2) You cannot change your research theme.
 3) Those who are considered inappropriate as a foreign research student after admission may be expelled from the school.
