JAXA is promoting supersonic research activity of advanced design technology for the development of a next generation supersonic transport aircraft (SST) with both economical and environmental-friendly features. Especially, in the aerodynamic design of SST, JAXA focuses on reducing both aerodynamic drag and sonic boom at supersonic cruise condition and improving aerodynamics at take-off and landing conditions, using CFD technology with high quality. In addition, JAXA is challenging to plan and conduct flight test programs to establish new design technologies in practical fields. (Kenji Yoshida)

Among the advanced matrix composite used for aerospace transportation, energy storage systems and advanced power generators, we are targeting the composite materials usable under ultra-high temperature, cryogenic or high-vacuum conditions, cooperating with the Takeda lab. on the evaluation of ultra-high heat resistance composite and nano-composite, analysis of CFRP reinforcement, etc. (Ogasawara)

In the research and development of reusable space transportation systems and planet exploration capsules, our research interest is spreading from the basic physics to project-oriented applications for heat protection system development and aerodynamic design for such vehicles. (Fujita)
